Research just published in the journal Environmental Research reports on a study which tested the urine of four racially and geographically diverse American families after eating their usual diet of conventional food for 6 days, and then after a controlled diet of all organic food for a further 6 days.

For example, poor sleep is associated with poor cognitive function, a higher risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease, and decreased performance at work.

Over the last few years, many studies have shown the benefit of calorie restriction and intermittent fasting. Benefits include weight loss, increased fat burning, muscle gain, improved energy levels, and improved insulin sensitivity. A recent trial, known as CALERIE (Comprehensive Assessment of the Long Term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy) tested the metabolic effects of calorie restriction in a group of 53 healthy, non-obese volunteers who cut calories by 15% over two years.

Degenerative diseases of the brain such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Dementia are reaching almost epidemic proportions these days, and many of us have been ‘touched’ by this epidemic through friends and family who suffer, or have died, from these conditions. 30 million people are affected by Alzheimer’s globally and this is likely to rise to 160 million by 2050. It is the 3rd leading cause of death in the USA and the leading cause of death for women in England and Wales (2nd for men).
